Since Waterbug is distributing "Color Came One Day," it's a bit of a conflict
of interest for me to pipe up here - but as a longtime Chuck Brodsky fan, I
disagree with aspects of David Schultz' review. To my ears, two of the long
songs here, "The Goat Man" and "Claire and Johnny" represent Chuck's best work.
Also JP Cormier's production is head and shoulders above anything on CB's
previous discs - Cormier serves, supports and drives the songs at every turn. For
anyone who has loved a mentally ill person, "Claire and Johnny" will touch your
heart in a way no song I've heard before will. It's a rare song that has the
courage to face the unresolvable with love. And Chuck's use of himself as a
small character in the song is another sort of risk-taking that's just so damn
refreshing from an artist who's already taken so many risks. Chuck's work has
deepened and grown in dimension here, and to me that's the story of "Color Came
One Day." There's also a unity of flow and theme - and the scene changes
between Ireland, and pre WWII and contemporary America, that creates a unified
flow - an album rather than a collection of tracks.
