Northeast Heritage Music Camp
Dates: Sun.-Sat. June 12-18, 2005
Location: Johnson State College, Johnson Vermont
Directors: Ken Perlman and Peter Langston
Located in the heart of northern Vermont's Green Mountains, the Northeast
Heritage Music Camp celebrates the acoustic music and folk dance traditions of
New England and eastern Canada. Come join us next June for a week of music
instruction by world class players from several of these great traditions,
dance
to their music at our nightly contras, hear them in concert, and -- if you're
so inclined -- jam with them or fellow tunes-aficionados into the wee hours.
We are proud for our inaugural run to announce the following instructors:
William Coulter (DADGAD guitar; fingerstyle specialist)
David Kaynor (contradance caller & New England fiddle)
Peter Langston (standard-tuned guitar; flatpick specialist)
Grey Larsen (flute, tin whistle, & contradance piano)
Daniel Lemieux (Quibecois fiddle)
Ken Perlman (clawhammer style 5-string banjo)
Sandy MacIntyre (Cape Breton fiddle)
Mary MacIntyre (Cape Breton piano)
Normand Miron (Quibecois accordion)
Pete Sutherland (New England fiddle)
Plus special guest, Alan Jabbour (Appalachian fiddle).
As sign-ups grow, we expect to hire additional teachers in related areas.
NHMC features five class sessions per day, each one hour and fifteen minutes
long. Classes start c. 9 AM and continue until c. 5:30 PM. Our evening program
features staff concerts, followed by contra-dancing, with music provided by
our staff. Over the course of the week, you'll have the opportunity to hear in
concert, and dance to the music of all of our staff members.
We hope to wind up our evening programs early enough to leave time for
spirited jams in a variety of genres; including scheduled jams at different
levels
led -- at least in their early stages -- by members of the faculty. Our
current
thinking is that on alternate nights, we'll schedule big faculty led jams
that focus on the following genres: Quebecois, New England, Cape
Breton/Scottish
and Appalachian old-time. Alternatively, there is plenty of space for small or
medium sized groups to organize their own jams at just about any time after
the conclusion of the main program.
Northeast Heritage Music Camp is headed up by two established musicians with
extensive experience in working at and running similar events in other parts
of the US. Ken Perlman has helped design and operate the Maryland Banjo
Academy, Banjo Camp North (Groton, Mass.), the Suwannee Banjo Camp (White
Springs, Florida), and is co-director of the American Banjo Camp (Seattle
area). Peter Langston has been a director of the Puget Sound Guitar
Workshop for over ten years. He has taught at music camps and been on the
staff of dance camps up and down the West Coast; he also co-directs the
American Banjo Camp.
