[dar-list] Who is the next Dar Williams?

This is a great question, but I originally thought it was more about a musician who would be inspired by her music and carry her style of music forward.  In terms of crowd appeal, I can't honestly say, because the fan-base and her music have changed significantly since I became a Dar fan in 1995.

Most of the names I think of who could compare with her songcraft on Mortal City are Dar's contemporaries rather than successors. Lori McKenna.  Patty Griffin. Lucinda Williams.  Richard Shindell.  Catie Curtis.

I'd love to see who people think carry her direct influence.  At the Philly Folk Fest last year, I thought Liz Longley (who may be more influenced by Joni Mitchell) is in the same neighborhood.  Still, this conversation will likely evolve over time as musicians cite her as a musical foremother.

The great news is folk musicians often enjoy sustained careers, so Dar might even be able to share the stage one day with these up-and-coming artists.
