I think that Bruce's song is saying that the radio that Dar knew from her
formative days- and Bruce's for that matter- simply doesn't exist anymore.
I'm sure that Bruce growing up in the NYC sphere of influence in the 60's
had his share of Jimmy Olsen & johnny Memphis- might even have been the
nightbird or Luke O'reilly or any number of those on WNEW back in the day.

All he needs is Johnny Memphis..or Jimmy Olsen ....and maybe a night or two
where his shirt was on backwards..

RADIO NOWHERE(c) Bruce Springsteen
Album's version
I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
I was spinnin' 'round a dead dial
Just another lost number in a file
Dancin' down a dark hole
Just searchin' for a world with some soul
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?
I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm
I want a thousand guitars
I want pounding drums
I want a million different voices speaking in tongues
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?
[Instrumental]
I was driving through the misty rain
Yeah searchin' for a mystery train
Boppin' through the wild blue
Tryin' to make a connection with you
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?
I just want to feel some rhythm
I just want to feel some rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm

So here's what I took I kept the wine and laughter Until every path just
grew up in every after Yeah through the peaks and twisty canyons I made many
great companions 'Cuz I never took heavy words for granted And I never took
the undeserved advantage No I never took the easy way So you can take a
little easy on me now 'Cuz you know that easy's never easy anyhow dar
