[dar-list] SOTW: The One Who Knows

The one who knows and So close to my heart sound different now. I am 31 now,
which seems to mean that my friends are in the process of reinventing
themselves... as parents. And forcing me to reinvent myself... as the
favorite queer uncle. It's incredible really. You don't thing of these
things, you lead the post-student life, which is really just an extension of
your college days, except they are filled with semi-regular jobs and
mortgage payments and paying the domestic worker and stuff like that.

And then, suddenly, your friends are pregnant, and the parties and weekend
getaways with friends are complemented by new souls.. And you make new
friends, the children around you, and get to know a child, seeing her grow
up. I don't think I myself will ever be a parent - this is the closest thing
to it and it is wonderful. My first new friend is almost a year now, and I
can't believe how fast she is becoming a little girl when first she was a
baby that I was afraid to hold.
And I am so incredibly sure that she will be the one who knows.
