Howdy---

If you take a look back through previous years' countdowns, you'll see
that Cheryl has always done incredibly well in these countdowns. When
'UMB counted down songs or albums, instead of artists, CW was the
regular winner; "Arrow" was the seeming unofficial song for the station.
Dar is a fan---in fact, I once saw here do a dead-on, appropriately
profane and hilarious imitation of Cheryl.

As for Cheryl, she is impressive. She's got that speaking voice that
reveals that she's been smoking for a gazillion years, and she's
dropping f-bombs and all kinds of stuff, and then she'll tilt her head
back and warble the most beautiful song in a sweet mezzo. Her really
pointed political/social songs ("If It Were Up to Me," "Don't Forget the
Guns," "Makes Good Sense to Me," "TV") stand in such stark contrast to
stunningly gorgeous gems, such as "Arrow," "75 Septembers," "Northern
Girl," "Driving Home," etc. In addition, she's had lots of success with
others covering her tunes, especially Suzy Bogguss, who did really well
with "Aces" and "Don't Wanna." I've often greatly enjoyed her shows, and
her CDs are an interesting, if sometimes bumpy, mix of the humorous and
serious.

That said, I'm in a bit of a Cheryl hiatus. After a few similar shows,
I'm waiting for some different stories...things have gotten a bit stale
for me. I still think she's really good, but I'm holding out for
something fresh.

WUMB on Thanksgiving will be doing (like virtually everyone else) a lot
of specialty programming (see below). Cheryl makes an appearance at 7:00
A.M. (after a particularly appealing 6:00 program). So anyone braving
that segment of the antemeridian can check her out.

Ciao!

Joe

As Joni Mitchell releases her first album of new material in 10 years
("Shine," September 24), award-winning producer Paul Ingles hosts "The
Emergence of Joni Mitchell," a two-hour examination of Mitchell, one of
the most heralded songwriters of her time. In this third installment of
his series on the seminal work of important figures in popular music,
Ingles and his guests explore how Joni Mitchell crafted her artistry and
connected with audiences over four decades. Mitchell put the experience
of being a woman and being human on artful display through her blatantly
honest and confessional lyrics, innovative open guitar tunings and
jazz-inflected vocals. The program focuses on Mitchell's key releases to
illuminate the musicianship of the woman "Rolling Stone" called "one of
rock's most daring and uncompromising innovators." By mixing Mitchell's
music from these pivotal moments with informed commentary from
musicians, fans, music critics and archival interviews with Mitchell
herself, "The Emergence of Joni Mitchell" articulates what music lovers
have found so compelling about this thoughtful and innovative writer and
performer. Special guests include music writers Ann Powers, Anthony
DeCurtis, Paul Zollo, Lydia Hutchinson and Holly George-Warren. Also
featured are musicians Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky and others.
