It was a great birthday celebration folk concert in Rahway, New Jersey on
Saturday night. I flew out from California for a long weekend with my mom. The
first time we've been together on my birthday in 46 years (I am an adoptee.)
We drove up the Parkway from the shore in the rain. We got to the high school
(they are renovating the beautiful theater during this season) early enough to
get in line and wait for the doors to open. Striking up a conversation with
the couple in front of us we realized we are both (all) reading or just read
Without A Map by Meredith Hall ( a story of birth, abandonment, adoption,
relationships and life....great book!) so that was kind of cool. (I stayed up
until 3:30am reading after we got home.) Catie Curtis opened. It was our first
time hearing her! Thanks for the introduction Dar. She was great. And then
DAR! It was very low key....acoustic and solo (except for a bit of help from
Catie on two songs.) It was the perfect concert for my mom. I didn't know if
it would be a night with the band or what we were in for, but it was just
perfect. My mom loved her. Her voice was clear and her banter was charming as
ever. Her guitar sounded so full. Was it the Taylor? She sounded so crystal
clear. We loved her! I didn't write down songs, but here's what I
remember--probably not all in order:
Calling the Moon
The Beauty of the Rain
The One Who Knows
The Easy Way (can't wait for more new songs)
After All
Comfortably Numb
The Blessings
If I Wrote You
Iowa
The Mercy of the Fallen
The Hudson
The Babysitter's Here (encore...distracted by the walkie-talkies....lost her
train of thought....the lighting was like a drug bust, and the high school was
like Narcville. Both Dar and Catie reflected on high school memories since we
were at a high school. Thanks for dedicating one to the teachers Catie!)
And she commented on the mischief her son is getting into. I can't imagine
that it's all that bad. Isn't he one year old now? And she talked about her
favorite god Hermes god of thieves and the underworld. (Guess I will read
about him again...it's been too long to remember much about Hermes.) And now
she's the mother of a blur. It will change....and calm down after he listens
to reason a bit more. I remember literally running all the time after mine.
I'm sure he isn't a sociopath!
and.....good to meet you in person Sharon! I will have to make it east again
for the spectacular Dar. I'm off to walk the beach one last time before
driving down to Atlantic City for the airport and California.
Love, Deana
