I wouldn't be so affirmative regarding John Lennon. Drugs weren't THE reason 
they broke up, but could be one of many little of them, considering drugs 
change personality and attitudes, and John had trouble with it more than the 
three others in 1969. See the "Cold Turkey" single he released solo in 
October of that year, at the same time of ABBEY ROAD. Paul McCartney refused 
to release it as a Beatles single then. To me, it's obvious that drugs are 
strongly in Lennon's work in these times.

But more again, there were politics. Lennon was very militant then , whereas 
Paul wasn't. It couldn't fit. What broke them up is that: one thought 
politics were deeply involved in pop music and society and vice versa, to 
him it was one whole thing. Paul didn't share that point. He did find this 
too radical. That's why they parted ways.
