No Mere Mortal

Singer/songwriter Dar Williams stirs up the Folk world with a mature
sophomore release
INTERVIEW BY JEREMY SCHLOSBERG

"In so doing, Williams taps a rich musical vein to forge ahead as a
songwriter, most notably in "As Cool As I Am," "The Ocean" (featuring John
Prine on backing vocals) and the breathtaking, seven-minute title track.

"It took me so long to finish that song," she says of "Mortal City," a tale
of the search for hope and connection in our too-often hopeless world. The
structure is subtle, and the lyrics flash from precise observation to
cryptic metaphor, from deadpan humor to desperation, sometimes in the same
breath. "That song, and 'As Cool As I Am,' both really pushed my boundaries.
They were things I thought people would hate. But I knew that I had to
finish them, if I wanted to keep on growing. They both paid off in the end,
I think."

>you, and I, and a them" or something close to it.
>
> I am very curious about the story behind "The Ocean" Can anyone help?
