[dar-list] change

Hunter Lovins recently came to my town to talk about creating a green
community, and she repeated the quote (don't remember who said it first) about
how the only person who likes change is a wet baby. Times of change are a good
opportunity to reflect. And they give that uncomfortable nudge to move. End of
the summer, beginning of the summer. And I can just see the college dorms all
packed up etc. as you write. After my initial college days, and during my
early hippy days we would salvage things left behind as trash and recycle them
in our college town community. There was so much STUFF! Dumpster diving.
My beginning of summer is a chaotic end of the school year. I can never seem
to manage to be ready for these time things....deadlines etc. I am trying to
finish report cards. They are supposed to be done today. We did a magnificent
end of the year play, and today we took a traditional field trip to the
bowling alley. We have only two more days left of the school year. Time to
move on.
Now that I'm older, I've been in the same place for the last 16 years. I've
been in the same house for the last 14 years (oh my gosh and it's still pink
in need of paint!) It feels sort of permanent there, but I know somewhere in
my heart and mind that it's all temporary. We should have a nice vegetable
garden this year if the other creatures don't eat everything. And the dogs are
getting older and at the end of their lives. My own kids are almost both
adults now. My husband is getting close to his mid 50s. I am past my mid 40s
now. But I still feel like a kid many times. My friends have kids graduating
college...and getting married, and starting adult lives. And how did Dar's son
get to age 3 already? I honestly thought he was a year old, maybe close to 2.
Time deceives us sometimes. And it seems like at some point we'll be able to
fluidly move through time. With greater understanding. It will all seem so
simple. It will just fall into place softly.
Happy summer solstice! Happy Father's Day! Happy moving. On.
Love, Deana
