Last night I was at the southpaw show in Brooklyn. Its rare that I can
attend a show where it takes me longer to find street parking than to
get home. It was great to be 10 or 15 minutes from home....No two hour
ride last night..... double the time finding a spot to park though...
southpaw is a beer smelling rock club that has a capacity for 400. The
put down seats and sold tickets for 200, seeing there were another
group of people who stood, they tried to cram in another 100 people or
only put 100 chairs up......
This club was familiar to the ones that Dar plays in the south, not as
big as Asheville or Variety in Atlanta but a rock club with a big bar
but this one had specialty beers on tap.....
After an unremarkable opening act, though her player had a melodica
that he blew into to change the tone of the keyboard...... Dar hit the
stage in a new dress over her jeans...
She had taken the subway to the show from Grand Central.... and was
very funny about noticing the people who "come to her shows".... In
brooklyn, they all looked like Dar Williams audience members..
This audience was familar with her music from college, most were 20
somethings and some thirty somethings, mostly men in the audience and
ofcourse the Park Slope lesbian population was out... what a
difference from Carnegie Hall.... this crowd was raucous, cat called,
was interactive, and knew all the words so they could sing along...
THEre are shouts for songs .....requests..
Dar handled all interactions with such mastery.....and skill..
Her set list included some of the songs from the nights previous with
Teen for G-d
calling the moon
the one who knows
are you out there
as cool as i am
Mercy of the fallen
babysitter
when i was a boy
but last night we got
IF i wrote you.... ( there is a friend of mine, i owe an email to...
that will know that its not because if i wrote you, you would not
write me again.....its for other reasons)
Dar played
afterall
iowa
two new songs..
Buzzer ( again)
the business of things - the business break up song
wilder than her and her encore of LET IT SNOW was appropriate
because we all woke up to snow on sunday....
This happened to be one of the best Dar shows i have seen in a long
time... It was like I was in north hampton or deep into Dar fan
country.... in a rock club where she was funnier than usual, sounded
great, looked great, the crowd energized her and showed their love and
she loved them right back....
it was a great show....
i saw lots of people over the two nights.... Mr and Mrs W and
family.... Mrs Robinson- not that mrs robinson.. Melissa, Trish,
Marika and Saxon, Chris, Gene and Isabel, Melissa and Lisa...
the place was packed with friends and fans....
even Rita Houston stayed for Dar's set at Zankel......
It was a great Dar weekend....

And an open door is to me now like the saddest of goodbyes
It's too late for turning back, I pray for the heart and the nerve
And I rely upon the moon, I rely upon the moon
