I think that the shows at Bryn Mawr were the best and worst for Dar.
The worst part was that there was difficulty with the sound. Her
guitar went in and out of amplification. It was fine during sound
check and after her first song, where i noticed she sat on the stage,
she asked for a guitar strap to be brought to her from her car.
Earlier in the day, she realized she didnt have a strap and someone
went to hte music store to get one. IT was delivered and seemed fine.
I saw her on stage with NO strap and wondered what happened. She asked
me to bring her a strap... so back and forth to her car to get a non
existant strap only for me to find out the Student Activities
Coordinator had gotten her a strap... and my running back and forth
for her keys and to get her guitar was futile and needless.
then her guitar died, or chord died or battery or the sound was
mismatched. Again, i went to get the Other Huss and Dalton...
let me stop here..... Dar told me and asked me to convey to the
Darlist... the following story..
she was in Pagosa Springs, Co at a festival and picked up a Martin
Guitar case. when she arrived home and opened it. It was NOT her
guitar, it was a Merle Haggard guitar belonging to someone else at the
festival. The other person, ended up with her Joan Baez guitar so her
guitar had to be UPSed to her and she was waiting for her JB guitar to
show up at her home. So Dar had her two Huss and Dalton guitars. One
of these is unreliable in sound as witnessed at the festival review in
seattle... Dar is concerned if the guitar sound is subject to the
altitude and humidity etc and is choosing not to use that guitar, but
she using the JB and her original Huss and Dalton.
The other backstory about Bryn Mawr is that they seem to have a May
Day event with maypole....where Dar has played before. They put her on
a haystack where she preformed. it seems the theme song for this event
has become AS COOL AS I AM .... Dar is sort of a cult hero to the
women of Bryn Mawr.... The Women of Bryn Mawr has a cheer that they
repeat, that evokes a greater spirit... only seniors can evoke the
cheer and it ends with repeating Bryn Mawr 3x and dedicating the
cheer. Well Dar got cheered many times during the night.
the shows were part of the weekend celebration of the opening of the
Katherine Houghton Hepburn Center. Dar followed the reception and
panel discussions and preceeded events at the Kimmel Center in Philly
and other panel discussions, on topic like Reproductive rights and
other womans issues...
The first set was filled with alums and teachers and administrators
and students.... all there to see Dar...
she played
the babysitter
close to my heart
when i was a boy
first two verses of Loretta Lynns "the pill"
with a story about loretta Lynn and 70s womens issues

There was a Q&A with Dar after each set

Yoko ono

iowa
end of the summer
each set included AS COOL AS I AM
with screaming and dancing and evoking the Bryn Mawr prayer... and
stories about Dar playing on the haystack
apart from the hardships with Straps, sound and stress of the
night.... the crowd made the shows special...
i left Bryn Mawr at 1130 and got home after 1am and had to get up at
530 to get to school and teach and get out to Bethlehem.....
so i was spent and suspect that Dar was just as tired yesterday...
