you will never guess who i had lunch with today.
i went to Angelica's kitchen (
http://www.angelicakitchen.com/philosophy.html) that hip and oh so
socially responsible business that only uses organic and ingredients
grown by sustainable agriculture. its seems that in the 10 years since
Jane and Amber went to visit their uncle and aunt alot has changed.
Jane is now a college professor in Archeology and Amber make ceramics
and pottery in their home in Vermont. They have adopted a child and
Amber has given birth to a second ( they refused to name the father,
but i speculate that it was David Crosby). their children are 4 and 7
and are growing up surrounded by a number of friends, family and
allies who all help to raise them. Jane said she could not have done
that without help. While she studied for her doctorate and then
through the tenure process things got hairy and scary and then they
talked about February and we all knew what February in Vermont bring
Jane and Amber grow their own vegtables and sell them from their home
to supplement their income. Amber also is on the PTA and is active in
the local Planned Parenthood and GLBT organization on campus. They
were remarking and very happy that New Jersey joined california and
vermont in granting civil unions, but would have liked marriage laws
like Massachusetts. Jane and Amber have been a couple since they first
met in college in
1995 and were "married" in 2000 after the courts of Vermont deemed
that that could.
Ofcourse the conversation, rolled around to that fateful xmas in 1995
when Jane and Amber went to visit their uncle on their way to Florida
for the new year. They recalled that Timmy is now in college studying
theology and considered being a priest or a therapist. Amber told me
that her father passed away a few years ago of congestive heart
failure but she was able to reconcile with him before he died. he
never quite understood Jane but Amber joked that not many people
understand her anyway.
Her aunt and uncle are fine and still in the same house and her aunt
finally shared that pumpkin pie recipe. Amber promised to send me a
copy so i could try that pie. Ofcourse, they would be going there for
Christmas and Timmy would be home from college and possibly bringing
his latest girlfriend. There are no more candy canes on the tree but
there will be dinner prepared by Amber's aunt. OFcourse, Jane and
Amber still dont eat meat or turkey so there will be tofurkey for
them. THeir uncle just got to used to it...
Jane and Amber wanted me to thank Dar Williams for immortalizing their
lives in song and asked me to pass on well wishes for a Happy Solstice
to her. We finished lunch and recognized the shortest day of the year
and Jane and Amber then drove off in their 1997 Toyota Tercel to get
to their aunt and uncles' home by 10pm.
Happy solstice to you all......
